A grade separated interchange, or flyover, has been identified as the preferred option for the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade. The option selected would be the safest and provide the best results for congestion, resilience and connectivity compared to other options assessed.
Jervis Bay Road to Sussex Inlet Road is a 20 kilometre section of the Princes Highway, crossing a range of local environments, landscapes and connecting multiple communities.
Transport’s identified corridor would improve safety and traffic efficiency by delivering an improved alignment with planning for two lanes in each direction.
It would improve safety, performance and accessibility at major intersections, better connecting communities off the highway. It would also improve efficiency and reduce congestion by bypassing east of Wandandian.
The identified corridor would connect with the proposed design for the Jervis Bay Road intersection upgrade.
A Milton Ulladulla bypass would deliver safer and more reliable journeys between South Coast communities and ease congestion especially during peak holiday periods. A Milton and Ulladulla bypass would significantly reduce travel time, particularly in holiday periods, by removing the need for vehicles to pass through multiple intersections. Transport for NSW is progressing with plans and has identified the existing bypass corridor in the Shoalhaven Local Environmental Plan (LEP) as the preferred strategic corridor option avoiding greater impacts to the native vegetation and wetlands.
This option would maximise the amount of traffic using the bypass, including heavy vehicles, and provide the most opportunities to connect to town centres, businesses, services, homes and local roads compared to other options assessed. This would provide smoother and more reliable journeys day-to-day throughout the community. It would also provide opportunities to enhance the character and liveability of the area, support sustainable economic growth and improve safety for transport users. This option would have lower impacts to environmentally sensitive areas, avoiding greater impacts to native vegetation and wetlands.
The consultation period will be extended until Sunday 14 February 2021 and we are encouraging locals and visitors to have their say. We are also carrying out additional traffic data collection throughout Milton, Ulladulla Burrill Lake and Lake Tabourie over the summer holiday period to better understand how the transport network operates over the peak holiday period.
Feedback received to date has focused on why the preferred strategic corridor option was chosen and what effects a bypass would have on traffic through local townships. This table compares the preferred strategic corridor and other corridor options which bypass Burrill Lake and Lake Tabourie.

Once complete, the Princes Highway upgrade will significantly improve safety for road users. Major upgrades typically have long lead times so we are focused on delivering road safety improvements in the short term while major upgrades are in development to immediately reduce the risk and severity of crashes. These safety improvements will be delivered between Nowra and the Victorian border as part of the Saving Lives on Country Roads program.
What is planned?
The Princes Highway helps drive the state’s third largest regional economy, is relied upon by over five hundred thousand locals and welcomes almost four million tourists each year.
Since 2011, the Australian and NSW governments have invested $2.5 billion upgrading the Princes Highway to create safer and more efficient journeys along the South Coast of NSW. This investment is transforming the region, improving safety, connecting communities, easing traffic congestion and growing regional economies.
Considerable work has already been completed, with more major projects underway.
The benefits of these major upgrades include improved safety, better local access, more reliable journeys, and more efficient and reliable freight movement.
In March 2019, the Australian and NSW governments committed to upgrade the Princes Highway between Nowra and the Victorian border, completing the full upgrade of the Princes Highway. More than
$1.5 billion has been committed so far to achieving this. We continue to work with local communities, businesses and stakeholders to determine the priorities and timing of these upgrades.

Transport for NSW is following NSW Health advice and has moved community information sessions for the Princes Highway upgrade projects online in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Live online Q&A sessions will be hosted online for each project on Monday, 6 April and each session will run for about 30 minutes.

Listening to the community’s questions and providing answers is an important step in moving forward with building a safer and more reliable Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and the Victorian border. We hope our communities leave better informed about the projects and better equipped to send their valuable comments and feedback.
